Revana Family Vineyards
In 1997, while visiting the Napa Valley, Dr. Madaiah Revana discovered a small parcel of prime vineyard land in St. Helena. Dr. Revana immediately sensed the property’s potential. The area was already known for producing some of the world’s most sought after Cabernet Sauvignon and the property’s gravelly soils, sloped pitch, and excellent exposures seemed perfect for growing grapes. Studies of the soil composition confirmed that it was an ideal location for premium Bordeaux varieties. In 1998, Dr. Revana hired acclaimed vineyard manager Jim Barbour to plant and maintain the 9-acre estate vineyard.
Renowned winemaker Heidi Barrett has been responsible for crafting the exceptional wines of the Revana Estate vineyard since its first vintage in 2001. She has left an indelible imprint and today winemaker Thomas Brown continues the tradition of making world-class Cabernet Sauvignon in the Revana style.
Dr. Madaiah Revana balances a successful practice as a cardiologist in Houston, Texas with his commitment to Revana Family Vineyard. His desire to take on an additional career making Cabernet Sauvignon is rooted in his love for both wine and the rich tradition and culture of winemaking.
First introduced to fine wine by friends, he quickly became fascinated with Bordeaux’s first growths. That fascination led to the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines of Napa Valley. Dr. Revana dedicated himself to learning all he could about his new interest. He traveled the wine regions of Europe and the United States, learning along the way, and he became determined to create a vineyard estate from which he could craft his own world-class wines. Revana Family Vineyard was born of that determination.
In 2011, Thomas Brown joined Revana Family Vineyard as consulting winemaker. A native of South Carolina, Thomas followed his interest in wine to the Napa Valley after completing college. His early days in the valley took him through a number of small wineries, but his winemaking career began at Turley Wine Cellars where he was the assistant winemaker through 2001.
Best known for the Cabernet Sauvignons that he has crafted for Schrader Cellars, Thomas has also received numerous accolades from the press. In 2010, Food & Wine Magazine named him Winemaker of the Year. Both Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate have bestowed multiple 100 point scores on Cabernets made by Thomas.
At Revana, Thomas is helping to lead a renewed focus on increasing wine quality in both the vineyard and winery. His non-interventionalist winemaking style allows the wines to truly showcase the Revana Estate Vineyard.
Over millions of years, through wind and rain events, stones and gravel from the surrounding hillsides have washed down to create the well-drained alluvial soils of the Revana Estate Vineyard.
The Revana Estate vineyard is located in St. Helena, an ideal spot for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This northern part of Napa is a narrow stretch of the valley framed by the Mayacamas and Vaca mountains. Each year, hillside erosion from the surrounding mountains provides a constant supply of gravel and soil resulting in the deep, well-drained soils that make up the Revana Estate.
This section of the upper valley also benefits from more moderate temperatures, a combination of warm days and cool nights, without the foggy mornings found in the lower valley or the extreme heat of Calistoga to the north. The balanced climate provides perfect growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Revana Estate vineyard was planted by our vineyard manager, Jim Barbour in 1998. It is comprised of nine separate blocks totaling nine acres. The vineyard blocks have different soil characteristics and are planted with a carefully selected array of rootstocks matched to each block’s soil type. To preserve the unique qualities of the blocks, they are farmed and vinified separately. A combination of close spacing, deep gravelly soils and exacting farming, guarantees low yields and rich, concentrated grapes.
At Revana we produce a single wine from the Estate vineyard. This singular focus affords us the opportunity to pursue a level of quality and artisanship unique to the great wines of the world.
The style of the Revana Cabernet is driven by the Estate vineyard. Each vineyard block is hand-harvested, vinified and barrel-aged separately prior to blending to give the winemaking team complete control over each section of the vineyard. That process allows the winemaker to determine the highest quality lots that will go into the final, single Cabernet blend.
The grapes are hand-harvested and hand-sorted to ensure that only the very best fruit goes into each vintage. After fermentation the wine is aged for 20 months in carefully selected French oak barrels from some of the finest cooperages. As the wine ages, the winemaker closely monitors the development of flavor and character, eventually selecting only the best lots for the final blend. The wines is then bottled and allowed to rest undisturbed until its release.
The resulting Revana wine, crafted from perfectly ripe Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, is aromatic, plush and elegant with a long, lingering finish.
