Turnbull Wine Cellars

Turnbull Wine Cellars

At Turnbull Wine Cellars we craft our award-winning wine using fruit sourced from our four stellar estate vineyards in Oakville and Calistoga. This diversity of fruit sourcing and exemplary viticultural work allows our winemaking team the ability to create wines with distinctive flavors that capture the personality of each site. Soils vary from deep alluvial fans on the valley floor to the shallow, volcanic and rocky structures of the hillsides.

Renowned Bay Area architect William Turnbull founded Johnson Turnbull Vineyards in 1979. Turnbull won several awards for his work on Fisher Winery, Cakebread Cellars, and Newton Vineyards. He designed Turnbull Cellars to be low key and in tune with its environment. It's a classic example of a small, hands-on Napa Valley winery.

The Turnbull name goes back to the early 1300’s, when Scottish King Robert The Bruce was hunting in the Great Caledon Wood, near Sterling, with a group of his closest and most trusted companions. When a ferocious bull suddenly attacked the king, his friend William Roule heroically placed himself between the bull and the king, and subdued the great beast, by turning its head to the ground, until help arrived. The grateful king dubbed his subject “Turnbull ” and awarded him a crest featuring a bull’s head with the motto: Audaci Favet Fortuna.

Our 100% Estate grown single-vineyard designate Cabernets, Turnbull Wine Cellars is located in the heart of the famed Napa Valley AVA of Oakville, California.

The Reserve Room Gallery, with its beautiful barrels, antique bar, and cathedral ceiling with exposed wood beams, is the perfect setting to taste our exceptional wines and view our latest fine art photography exhibit. As independent grape growers who also make wine, we control the process from "grape to glass".

Turnbull’s grapes are grown on three distinct vineyards. The 14-acre Turnbull Vineyard is the winery’s original historic vineyard site, standing proudly at the northern boundary of the Oakville appellation. The varieties grown here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petite Sirah, and Sauvignon Blanc. Turnbull Vineyards’ red wines exhibit remarkable brightness with red cherry and strawberry notes, while its whites are distinguished by intense melon and citrus notes.

Ancient red volcanic soils from the adjoining Vaca Range create a sloping bench upon which the 59-acre ranch of Fortuna Vineyard is situated. Growing such varieties as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Sauvignon Blanc, Fortuna produces a spicy dark fruit. Its reds exhibit dark fruit flavors coupled with spicy notes of black cherry, blackberry, baking spices, and mint. The Sauvignon Blanc grown at this vineyard exhibits a more tropical fruit character that that of Turnbull’s other sites.

Thirdly, the 101-acre Amoenus Vineyard, located in the western hills of Calistoga, has restrictive volcanic soils, both red clay and white tufa types, which yield wines of dense flesh and unique minerality. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, and Malbec varieties grown on this property produce a rich dark fruit, velvet tannins, and a plush mid palate. Amoenus’ reds exhibit a remarkable depth of mid palate and rich, ripe tannins.

Situated high on the Oakville Bench, the view from Turnbull’s 62-acre Leopoldina Vineyard is dizzying. Volcanic rock and scarce soil create wines of impressive structure and rich texture. Leopoldina produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah, and Sangiovese varieties, and structured, texture-filled wines. Its reds possess a fine texture, structured tannins, and lingering minerality.
