The Kimball Family ballooning history goes back to the 1970s when Napa Valley was beginning to develop as a destination for wonderful wine and great restaurants. Tourism was on the rise and so were the first Napa hot air balloon companies. Jay Kimball was one of the first pioneers of commercial ballooning in Napa Valley and all will agree that Jay took ballooning to ""new heights."" Jay opened up new flight corridors in Lake Tahoe and Del Mar, CA and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
Adventure was just over the next horizon and the Kimball Family found many horizons to explore. Gretchen, Jayson and Jared jumped aboard the balloons with their father, Jay, and developed a deep understanding of the skills needed to find wind currents and landing spots. Jayson has been flying commercially since his 18th birthday, which was back in 1995. Gretchen began her commercial piloting in 1999 and Jared is flying in his spare time, while handling the marketing and special events for the company. Our family comprises a great team, offering you a personal touch and an unforgettable experience on your Napa Valley hot air balloon adventure.
As we rise above the valley floor, panoramic views open up of the Napa Valley wine growing region. To the north the majestic Mt. St. Helena, to the west the Mayacamas Mt. Range, and the east the sculptured terrain of the Vaca Range. With favorable winds aloft the balloons can climb to higher altitudes where we may catch a glimpse of the San Francisco skyline and even the majestic Sierras to the east.
The altitude will vary during the flight and depends on the wind conditions that day. Average altitudes in our area are between 1,000 and 3,000 feet above the valley floor. Some of the flight may be at treetop level. Flights typically last about one hour, but may last from 45 minutes to one hour and 45 minutes. Pilots must take into account the wind speed, direction, and the availability of landing sites. Each flight is unique.
We are blessed in the Napa Valley with nearly perfect conditions for hot air ballooning most of the year. Those conditions are calm surface winds, stable air currents and cool temperatures. Each year, on average, we are able to fly about 200 days.
Because there are so many variables in ballooning, we can only give an estimate of how much time you should plan on spending with us. Generally, the entire experience will last for about 3-½ to 4 hours. This includes check-in, balloon inflation, the flight, pack-up, transportation back from the landing site, and a leisurely sit-down breakfast served in a restaurant setting in Yountville. We hope that our passengers will be able to set aside enough time to fully enjoy the magnificent experience of ballooning hot air balloon flying without feeling rushed.
The Kimball Family loves Napa Valley and enjoys sharing their stories and limitless knowledge of this spectacular region with their guests aboard their balloons. There really is no better way to experience the magnificence of the Valley than from the vantage point of a hot air balloon. We invite you to come share this special experience with Napa Valley Aloft Balloon Rides.
